Key takeaways

AI holds up well on descriptive work - summarizing performance, structuring KPIs, spotting patterns - but strategy and business judgment still need a person in the loop.

The two areas where AI scored highest, audience/targeting analysis and budget pacing, are also the two closest to real automation, with human approval still gating the final call.

Output quality came down to context, not the model. Clean data, a clear brief, and real business history mattered more than which AI tool specialists used.

What the session covered

We tested AI against 7 real advertising analysis and optimization tasks, scored by 12 advertising specialists working across our entire client portfolio - not a demo account, not a hypothetical.

At VertoTalks #20, Rumyana Kercheva and Denislav Hadzhiminev walked through what we found, task by task:

  • Campaign & keyword performance analysis - where AI reliably summarizes and structures data, and where it still invents numbers that aren't there
  • Search terms, audience & targeting - strong at pattern detection and grouping; exclusions and strategic calls stay with a human
  • Asset & ad-level performance - solid at ranking and structuring creative, weaker at explaining why something worked
  • Audience/targeting & budget pacing - the two highest-scoring areas, with budget pacing flagged as the strongest automation candidate, though only a handful of specialists have tested it so far
  • The actual bottleneck - why the answer wasn't a better prompt, but better context

Humans aren't being replaced. They're being repositioned. AI handles descriptive analysis well. But the strategy, business judgment, and context still belong to us.
